[ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ]
Fruit Chan’s very Hong Kong story is based on a local internet sci-fi novel with a title made up of 17 Chinese characters plus a comma. A mini-bus leaves beautiful Mongkok one evening for Tai Po. It exits the Lion Rock Tunnel, drops off three Chinese University students and arrives in a Tai Po totally void of people and traffic. Then the passengers start dying horrible disfiguring deaths, or are raped and murdered by fellow travellers. A streetwise apocalyptic vision with special Fruit Chan characteristics, ingeniously aided by local rocker Jan Curious strumming a broom guitar and lip synching “This is ground control to Major Tom...”

[ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ]
A night like any other in the streets of Hong Kong: in the midst of the tangle of night-owls, cars and vendors, a group of passengers climbs aboard a minibus that is to take them from Mongkok to Tai Po. The group is as diverse as the city: there’s a young man on drugs, an arguing couple, a woman with prayer beads and a girl who has just fallen in love. And behind the wheel sits the chatty driver. But as the bus emerges from a tunnel, everything is suddenly quite still: the streets and buildings are all empty and there’s not a soul to be seen; it’s as if everyone has suddenly been swallowed by the earth. Only the millions of neon lights continue to blink, as if nothing has happened. The eclectic group of passengers seek refuge in a deserted café and discuss what they should do. Then they make an horrific discovery … After his film Dumplings, which premiered in the 2005 Panorama, indie director Fruit Chan adapts the best-selling novel ‘Lost on a Minibus from Mongkok to Taipo’ and once again turns the horror genre upside down for his screen version, The Midnight After. A fast-paced and scary shocker which also happens to feature a David Bowie song.

[ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ]
Action maestro Dante Lam strikes again with a psychological thriller packed with ferocious antics. Daniel Wu plays Dan, a taciturn and dutiful cop. Cruel fate leads him to save Nick Cheung’s life, the leader of a gang of violent armed robbers, allowing him to go on to commit more crimes and kill more cops. Guilt-ridden, Dan devises an outlandish scheme to “befriend” the leader and causes the gang to implode. But someone who so single-mindedly pursues anything might just be sick in the head and have a history. His superiors suspect as much, but the snowball of crime committed in the name of justice has started rolling.

[ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ]
A shootout on the night-time streets of Hong Kong results in a bleeding man being taken to hospital. Reticent policeman Dave doesn't think twice about donating blood to save him. But the wounded man turns out to be Hon Kong, head honcho of a brutal group of street-thugs known as the ‘Gang from Hell’. The gang commit murderous hold-ups wearing demon masks and show no mercy to either civilians nor the police. Dave is plagued by a guilty conscience and decides to dismantle the gang. He is haunted by increasingly dreadful visions which appear to be connected to his past. When Hon is betrayed by gang-members, Dave decides to throw in his lot with the criminal in order to achieve his goal. But boundaries become blurred: Dave falls under suspicion of murder, colleagues turn out to be corrupt and his visions become ever more threatening ... In That Demon Within multi-award-winning action specialist Dante Lam, who with this new film is now a guest of the Berlinale for the fourth time, tells a virtuoso, psychologically ambiguous cop story imbued with the shady atmosphere and extremes of the megacity.

By a strange twist of fate, dutiful Hong Kong policeman Dan saves the life of the leader of a violent gang of armed robbers. When they commit another crime, Dan is determined to put an end to their activities. He works with the leader, whom the gang had betrayed, to engineer a plan to wreak havoc within the gang and let the gangsters kill one another. But it becomes increasingly obvious to Dan and to his colleagues that Dan is suffering from a severe mental disorder, and Dan finds that instead of upholding the law as a righteous police officer, he has now become a fugitive wanted for murder. Dan changes his plan and executes one final move that is certain to wipe out all traces of the gang and restore his reputation as a good police officer.

So Po-Wing considers himself being underappreciated. He works at “Get Rich Now Consultants Limited” founded by “The Godfather of MLM” Fat Ma. Wing’s colleagues often steal his ideas, bringing his career to a dead end.

Wing also has a mother who treats him as cash cow, and an injurious friend Wah-Dee who often embroils him into trouble. Despite all the negativity, Wing has a gentle and virtuous childhood sweetheart, Bobo Chung, who always comforts him when he is dejected. He always vents his grievance to her, as he believes Bobo will never leave him for the world.

Wing receives a weird text message one day, saying: Ever thought of deleting those you dislike? Forward this message to a friend. Wish your wish comes true!

On Wing’s birthday, Fat Ma fires him with some ridiculous reasons. Wing is aggrieved and accidentally kills Fat Ma in the quarrel, and disposes his body in the boot of Fat Ma’s car. But when Wing returns to the office, he is shocked to find his colleagues addressing an imposing foreigner Boss Ma. Wing goes back and sneaks to take a look in the boot, only to find it empty!

As the story continues, how would Wing use this incredible superpower to change his life? Will Wing live a perfect life happily ever after?

The sleepy fishing town of Aberdeen was where the British landed to take Hong Kong, hence its Chinese name: “Little Hong Kong”. Likewise, the Cheng family embodies a microcosm of our city, with its contradictions between modernity and traditions, family and individuality. Aberdeen is at once intimate and sprawling, revealing uniquely troubled characters, from the eldest, the Taoist priest patriarch Dong, to the youngest, the bullied elementary schooler Chloe. Pang mixes his signature humor with the fantastical, incorporating dreams, the supernatural and other surprises to distinguish this star-studded film from ordinary family drama.
