The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG) made 1.1 billion. In the film he starred from the beginning to the end, even served as the film's action director. He deserved much of the box office success credit.

The film company already announced the sequel, but suddenly Yen Chi Tan was rumored to be exhausted from playing Sun Wukong and the film company was forced to consider replacements for him due to concern that he would turn down the sequel. The company initially considered Huang Xiaoming, Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) or Choi Si-Won to play Sun Wukong. Yen Chi Tan through his spokesperson Ms. Cheung revealed that he was still considering the role and indirectly expressed that the recasting was not confirmed. The film company still had its eyes on Yen Chi Tan's performance substance and box office draw, ultimately he remained the Pretty Monkey King's first choice.
